Living here
McAllen is the retail and medical center of Hidalgo County, and for many families it is the first city that comes to mind when they think of the Valley. Shopping at La Plaza Mall and along the Expressway 83 corridor draws visitors from both sides of the border, and that steady traffic supports a broad base of jobs in retail, hospitality, health care and international trade.
Most of the city is served by McAllen ISD, with parts of the north and west falling into Sharyland ISD and other neighboring districts. South Texas College has its main campus here, and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is a short drive away in Edinburg. Before you fall in love with a street, it is worth checking the exact school zone for the address, because district lines do not always follow city limits.
Daily life is easy to like. The McAllen Convention Center district, Quinta Mazatlán and the city's network of parks give residents places to walk, bird and gather, and the dining scene is one of the strongest in South Texas. Commutes are usually short: most errands sit within fifteen minutes, and Expressway 83 and Interstate 69C connect McAllen to Mission, Pharr and Edinburg.
Housing ranges from established neighborhoods with mature trees near the city center to newer master planned communities on the north side, where builders continue to open new phases. Whether you want something close to the action or a quieter street farther north, we are happy to walk you through what each part of town feels like day to day.
